ABOUT HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF LETTERS DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY
The Department of Sociology was established in 1967 under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Nihat Nirun. To date, Prof. Dr. Nihat Nirun, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yörükoğlu, Prof. Dr. Rıfat Önsoy, Prof. Dr. M. Cihat Özönder, Prof. Dr. Tülin İçli, Prof. Dr. Gülay Arıkan, Prof. Dr. Nevin Güngör Ergan, Prof. Dr. Aylin Görgün Baran, and Prof. Dr. Esra Burcu Sağlam have served as Head of Department. Since 2022, the chairmanship is held by Prof. Dr. Birsen Şahin Kütük.
The department conducts Sociology Undergraduate, Sociology Scientific Preparation, Sociology Graduate (Master of Arts), Women and Gender Studies Graduate (Master of Arts), and Sociology Doctoral (PhD) programs. A Double Major Program with the departments of History and Philosophy, and a Sociology Minor Program open to all students registered at the university are offered. The department contributes to teaching activities in many other departments by offering introductory or advanced level sociology courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
As of the 2024-25 academic year, the faculty staff of the Sociology Department consists of 5 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor, and 8 Research Assistants. The department is one of the main centers in Turkey where young academics to be employed by other universities are trained under the Academic Staff Training Project.
Sociology Department students can be appointed as Philosophy Group Teachers in educational institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education by taking at least 16 credits of Philosophy, 8 credits of Logic, and 16 credits of Psychology courses.
Erasmus, Mevlana, and Farabi exchange programs are conducted for our department students and academic staff within the framework of bilateral protocols.
